The second post
Well I did not manage too keep to posting once a week and I don’t think that it was a reasonable target so I am going to get rid of that rule and post when I have something interesting to say. So over the past few weeks I have been playing (and buying) a lot of games due to the steam sales and the many big releases last month which means that I have not done a lot of work. Strangely, the games I have been playing the most in the past month are not exactly new nor are they new to me. With Team Fortress 2 and Borderlands taking up the most of my play time.
However I did not spend the entire month playing games and I found myself playing around with the Unity Engine again. I set myself a mini project of creating a GUI that feels good to use. Strangely this task was harder than it seemed. It took a few minutes to get a functional GUI thanks to Unity’s great tools and documentation however my GUI was not very responsive and as soon as you clicked something it would instantly change to the next GUI screen. So I set myself a second task of making the boring old GUI fun to use without making it over complicated. I did two things to improve the GUI, I added a sound for when the user hovers over a button or presses a button and I animated everything in when the Menu changed.
This little project made me realise just how much work goes into the tiniest little aspects of a game and also that taking on a small task such as creating a menu helps to make the bigger tasks more manageable and less demoralizing. I have also begun on a new little project and I will talk more about that in the next blog post which hopefully will have a better title than this one does.
