Announcing Cube Arena

A game named just as well as my blog posts.

For the past two weeks I have been working on a small networked game using Unity3D in order to better my skills with both unity and networking. The game isĀ  arena based and focuses on class based PVP however there will be some kind of PVE survival mode for some co-operative play. Currently the game only features a small prototype of the mage class and the basic framework of the multi-player code. This allows players to host or join a server and spam fireballs at will. There is also a half implemented prototype warrior which can swing his sword at will without the worry of hurting anyone. You can play the current buld here

In the future the game will offer a small selection of abilities for each class and a number of game modes and maps. A hotkey based combat system, textured characters, score system and multi-player animation system. This is my first game and I am working on it alone however I hope to have a release date sometime in February. Cube arena will be released for free on Kongregate.

The second post

Published on December 26th, 2011 by in Blog

Well I did not manage too keep to posting once a week and I don’t think that it was a reasonable target so I am going to get rid of that rule and post when I have something interesting to say. So over the past few weeks I have been playing (and buying) a lot of games due to the steam sales and the many big releases last month which means that I have not done a lot of work. Strangely, the games I have been playing the most in the past month are not exactly new nor are they new to me. With Team Fortress 2 and Borderlands taking up the most of my play time.

However I did not spend the entire month playing games and I found myself playing around with the Unity Engine again. I set myself a mini project of creating a GUI that feels good to use. Strangely this task was harder than it seemed. It took a few minutes to get a functional GUI thanks to Unity’s great tools and documentation however my GUI was not very responsive and as soon as you clicked something it would instantly change to the next GUI screen. So I set myself a second task of making the boring old GUI fun to use without making it over complicated. I did two things to improve the GUI, I added a sound for when the user hovers over a button or presses a button and I animated everything in when the Menu changed.

This little project made me realise just how much work goes into the tiniest little aspects of a game and also that taking on a small task such as creating a menu helps to make the bigger tasks more manageable and less demoralizing. I have also begun on a new little project and I will talk more about that in the next blog post which hopefully will have a better title than this one does.

Welcome to my blog

Published on November 25th, 2011 by in Blog

Hello,

My name is Bladesfist, I’m a gamer who is trying his best to turn his passion of game development into reality. Over the past few years I have been learning Java and C#. I have used these languages to create mods and small game projects that I never ended up finishing. So I decided to write a blog to help keep me motivated and to post information about projects i’m currently working on. I will update this blog weekly with what I have been doing and all the things I have learnt. At the moment I am following a brilliant Hack and Slash RPG tutorial series which can be found at http://www.burgzergarcade.com/hack-slash-rpg-unity3d-game-engine-tutorial I am also working with a friend on my own game project that I will talk about soon and hopefully I will have a lot more to talk about in the upcoming weeks.
